Murata and REKA team up to support the emerging and growth of Traffic Data in Malaysia

In this ever-evolving technological age, businesses are now required to advertise on the physical space and track in digital in order to compete fast with others of the same caliber. As a way to help empower this technology to rise, Murata Electronics is now teaming up with a Malaysian R&D startup, REKA, to explore the potential engagement in the field of traffic data monitoring. REKA aims to provide real-time traffic information which will definitely benefit smart city initiatives as well as the digital advertising sector.

This system uses raw data from Murata’s sensors which assists REKA to analyze said data with High Accuracy in real-time to provide unique data analysis based on the traffic counter result. The collected raw data is classified by vehicle class, the number of vehicles, and emission of CO2 within the sensor’s area coverage.

A common fear when it comes to data tracking and sensors is the public’s privacy security. However, with this piece of technology, the public’s privacy security is no longer a concern because the sensor is built to protect an individual’s privacy since it will not detect any individuals in the vehicle as the sensor is only counting and detecting the vehicle’s speed as well as the data components surrounding the sensor. “I am very excited to bring this ground-breaking work to our local ecosystem as real-time data is the most important piece of information that agencies require today, especially for smart city initiatives which will help in developing areas based on the ultra-accurate detection and changing the landscape in the digital advertising sector” commented Amri Mohd Din, the COO of REKA.

This technology was deployed in Cyberjaya and the data collected was digested for the Sepang Municipal Council and was converted into useful information that can potentially help planners and agencies to make more informed decisions. Additionally, local authorities are also able to utilize this data during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to determine the necessary measures to curb the spread of the virus by monitoring the traffic during the MCO period. According to the collected data, there has been a significant decrease of vehicles on the road during the MCO from 1,521,041 vehicles to 369,956 vehicles which imply that the safety measures put in place have successfully kept citizens staying indoors.

“This collaboration between Murata and REKA is extremely important, especially in Malaysia with all the smart city initiatives that have been brought to the table while also monitoring the effectiveness of the safety measures set in place by the government to decrease the numbers of COVID-19 cases. REKA is excited to be an active link that prioritizes emerging initiatives and ideas in direct contact with the data collected which can have a tangible impact on the economy in general” added Amri to conclude the project.

What does Big Data mean to businesses?

The evolution of how we use and understand data is faster than ever, with analytics being applied in almost every industry, especially in boosting commercial elements within businesses. Big Data value is the center of what makes it so relevant to our world today.

by Ridzwan Razalee

One of the values Big Data has offered to the world is the democratization of how businesses operate. You no longer need a taxi to get paid for picking someone from the airport. Owning a hotel is not a requirement for making some extra cash for providing someone with a bed to sleep in for a couple of nights.

Airbnb and Grab are just some of the companies which prove just what Big Data can do for the local community and economy. It creates a new business ecosystem for everyone to thrive.

Big Data is not just limited to those with big fundings in Silicon Valley, but those of us running our home-based operations can also benefit from it. Organizing items such as purchase orders, bookings, finance has never been easier, and all this is available to any of us today with Internet access.

Understanding a business market segment is a great way to ensure business growth. Companies such as Facebook, Amazon, and Instagram are helping people understand online habits, interests, and who are the most likely suited customers for a business to operate.

However, big data is not limited to just online or social media platforms. Digital platforms such as billboards on highways, bus stops, and even train stations can have their advertisement benefit from big data.

At REKA, we have the honor of taking the understanding market segment to a new level as we collaborate with one of our Japanese partners, Murata. Sensors installed at traffic billboards through our collaboration help gather information such as the number of vehicles during traffic, weather, and even carbon emissions.

People still react to advertising on these platforms, so it would be of great benefit if we could have an even more in-depth understanding of what is the most effective way of using these platforms for advertisers.

The future would highly depend on how we gather and manage the information which we obtain. Big Data is shaping the world. Not just in business but other fields from medical, transportation, and even education.

Text analytics, machine learning, predictive analytics, data mining, statistics, and natural language processing are some of the advanced techniques used to gain new insights from previously untapped data sources.

With such tools within our reach, let us build a better future together.

Data Analytics and How It’s Relevant to Businesses

The term Big Data has been thrown around in the tech world for the past decade. Today, it has become a buzzword among big corporations to even your local mom-and-pop stores.

But what is it about big data that has garnered such an interest even among the average businessman? It seems that the days when tech innovations were only limited to those in the industry have shifted their course. Today the smartphone alone has enabled a single person with tools that once only existed in science fiction.

Every business at its core is nothing more than just transactions and interactions. It is a relationship between those providing goods and those receiving them.

The foundation of any successful business is the records of its operations.  This practice helps create a flow and smoothness in a business operation as they can gather and digest information to help their business operate optimally.

So how does big data come within an old age practice of collecting information and storing it somewhere?

Big Data, as the name, suggests deals with an enormous amount of information. It is essentially the center of what runs a majority of our daily tasks today. From our social media accounts to our emails and the purchases we make online.

However, it is not just about the number of data one collects when dealing with Big Data, but also about how it is curated.

The 4 V within Big Data would help us explore and understand this concept with more clarity. The 4 V: Volume, Velocity, Variety, and Veracity.

by Ridzwan Razalee

Volume

Big Data processes data larger than terabytes and petabytes, taking giant leaps since the first electronic computer in just a short span of 50 years.

Volume is the first V to establish we are dealing with Big Data. The characteristic of the data processed is an integral part of the whole approach as well.

Variety

The information we are collecting from big data comes from a variety of sources. Each of these specific sources would require customized processing capabilities and specialized algorithms to make sense of the data.

Imagine obtaining every information on customers, competitors, suppliers, etc. All this information would be useless unless one can think of a way to give them specific treatment to make better decisions.

Veracity

Data Veracity is how accurate or truthful the set of data that one acquires. Veracity in Big Data goes deeper than just the quality of data, it also covers accuracy in terms of relevance and usefulness.

Information is always in abundance, even before the digital age. By being selective on which information is relevant to us has always been the key to success. For example, you wouldn’t take a piece of a financial report online and use it without validation.

Veracity is the element of Big Data that works on validating the data at hand so it may serve to help businesses make better decisions moving forward.

Velocity

The flow of the information is just as important when it comes to managing these data for companies. They would rely on these data to come in as close to real-time as possible.

Big Data Velocity deals with the speed at which data flows from sources like business processes, machines, social media sites, and mobile devices.

Think of Facebook posts or Twitter’s tweets as an example of data processed at a high velocity. Data flows in large amounts and continuously, which allows businesses to process information as events are unfolding that would directly impact their business.
