Murata and REKA team up to support the emerging and growth of Traffic Data in Malaysia

In this ever-evolving technological age, businesses are now required to advertise on the physical space and track in digital in order to compete fast with others of the same caliber. As a way to help empower this technology to rise, Murata Electronics is now teaming up with a Malaysian R&D startup, REKA, to explore the potential engagement in the field of traffic data monitoring. REKA aims to provide real-time traffic information which will definitely benefit smart city initiatives as well as the digital advertising sector.

by Irma

This system uses raw data from Murata’s sensors which assists REKA to analyze said data with High Accuracy in real-time to provide unique data analysis based on the traffic counter result. The collected raw data is classified by vehicle class, the number of vehicles, and emission of CO2 within the sensor’s area coverage.

A common fear when it comes to data tracking and sensors is the public’s privacy security. However, with this piece of technology, the public’s privacy security is no longer a concern because the sensor is built to protect an individual’s privacy since it will not detect any individuals in the vehicle as the sensor is only counting and detecting the vehicle’s speed as well as the data components surrounding the sensor. “I am very excited to bring this ground-breaking work to our local ecosystem as real-time data is the most important piece of information that agencies require today, especially for smart city initiatives which will help in developing areas based on the ultra-accurate detection and changing the landscape in the digital advertising sector” commented Amri Mohd Din, the COO of REKA.

This technology was deployed in Cyberjaya and the data collected was digested for the Sepang Municipal Council and was converted into useful information that can potentially help planners and agencies to make more informed decisions. Additionally, local authorities are also able to utilize this data during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to determine the necessary measures to curb the spread of the virus by monitoring the traffic during the MCO period. According to the collected data, there has been a significant decrease of vehicles on the road during the MCO from 1,521,041 vehicles to 369,956 vehicles which imply that the safety measures put in place have successfully kept citizens staying indoors.

“This collaboration between Murata and REKA is extremely important, especially in Malaysia with all the smart city initiatives that have been brought to the table while also monitoring the effectiveness of the safety measures set in place by the government to decrease the numbers of COVID-19 cases. REKA is excited to be an active link that prioritizes emerging initiatives and ideas in direct contact with the data collected which can have a tangible impact on the economy in general” added Amri to conclude the project.

What does Big Data mean to businesses?

The evolution of how we use and understand data is faster than ever, with analytics being applied in almost every industry, especially in boosting commercial elements within businesses. Big Data value is the center of what makes it so relevant to our world today.

by Ridzwan Razalee

One of the values Big Data has offered to the world is the democratization of how businesses operate. You no longer need a taxi to get paid for picking someone from the airport. Owning a hotel is not a requirement for making some extra cash for providing someone with a bed to sleep in for a couple of nights.

Airbnb and Grab are just some of the companies which prove just what Big Data can do for the local community and economy. It creates a new business ecosystem for everyone to thrive.

Big Data is not just limited to those with big fundings in Silicon Valley, but those of us running our home-based operations can also benefit from it. Organizing items such as purchase orders, bookings, finance has never been easier, and all this is available to any of us today with Internet access.

Understanding a business market segment is a great way to ensure business growth. Companies such as Facebook, Amazon, and Instagram are helping people understand online habits, interests, and who are the most likely suited customers for a business to operate.

However, big data is not limited to just online or social media platforms. Digital platforms such as billboards on highways, bus stops, and even train stations can have their advertisement benefit from big data.

At REKA, we have the honor of taking the understanding market segment to a new level as we collaborate with one of our Japanese partners, Murata. Sensors installed at traffic billboards through our collaboration help gather information such as the number of vehicles during traffic, weather, and even carbon emissions.

People still react to advertising on these platforms, so it would be of great benefit if we could have an even more in-depth understanding of what is the most effective way of using these platforms for advertisers.

The future would highly depend on how we gather and manage the information which we obtain. Big Data is shaping the world. Not just in business but other fields from medical, transportation, and even education.

Text analytics, machine learning, predictive analytics, data mining, statistics, and natural language processing are some of the advanced techniques used to gain new insights from previously untapped data sources.

With such tools within our reach, let us build a better future together.

Data Analytics and How It’s Relevant to Businesses

The term Big Data has been thrown around in the tech world for the past decade. Today, it has become a buzzword among big corporations to even your local mom-and-pop stores.

But what is it about big data that has garnered such an interest even among the average businessman? It seems that the days when tech innovations were only limited to those in the industry have shifted their course. Today the smartphone alone has enabled a single person with tools that once only existed in science fiction.

Every business at its core is nothing more than just transactions and interactions. It is a relationship between those providing goods and those receiving them.

The foundation of any successful business is the records of its operations.  This practice helps create a flow and smoothness in a business operation as they can gather and digest information to help their business operate optimally.

So how does big data come within an old age practice of collecting information and storing it somewhere?

Big Data, as the name, suggests deals with an enormous amount of information. It is essentially the center of what runs a majority of our daily tasks today. From our social media accounts to our emails and the purchases we make online.

However, it is not just about the number of data one collects when dealing with Big Data, but also about how it is curated.

The 4 V within Big Data would help us explore and understand this concept with more clarity. The 4 V: Volume, Velocity, Variety, and Veracity.

by Ridzwan Razalee

Volume

Big Data processes data larger than terabytes and petabytes, taking giant leaps since the first electronic computer in just a short span of 50 years.

Volume is the first V to establish we are dealing with Big Data. The characteristic of the data processed is an integral part of the whole approach as well.

Variety

The information we are collecting from big data comes from a variety of sources. Each of these specific sources would require customized processing capabilities and specialized algorithms to make sense of the data.

Imagine obtaining every information on customers, competitors, suppliers, etc. All this information would be useless unless one can think of a way to give them specific treatment to make better decisions.

Veracity

Data Veracity is how accurate or truthful the set of data that one acquires. Veracity in Big Data goes deeper than just the quality of data, it also covers accuracy in terms of relevance and usefulness.

Information is always in abundance, even before the digital age. By being selective on which information is relevant to us has always been the key to success. For example, you wouldn’t take a piece of a financial report online and use it without validation.

Veracity is the element of Big Data that works on validating the data at hand so it may serve to help businesses make better decisions moving forward.

Velocity

The flow of the information is just as important when it comes to managing these data for companies. They would rely on these data to come in as close to real-time as possible.

Big Data Velocity deals with the speed at which data flows from sources like business processes, machines, social media sites, and mobile devices.

Think of Facebook posts or Twitter’s tweets as an example of data processed at a high velocity. Data flows in large amounts and continuously, which allows businesses to process information as events are unfolding that would directly impact their business.

Mission to embark digital transformation in 2021

Digital transformation is a widespread movement that global companies, large and small, are quickly adopting for their business to stay afloat, especially during this ongoing pandemic.

by Irma

During this era of modern technology, we’re slowly but surely shifting from the physical world to the digital space. This phenomenon is known as the digital transformation which refers to the convergence of all digital technologies to reconstruct services and operations by actively reshaping or replacing outdated technology with the latest trending digital technologies. This digitalization movement includes shifting paper to spreadsheets, written records to typed documents and from managing old businesses practices to smart tech-based practices where modern companies are reimagining the way they run their business by adopting new digital technologies to leverage the digital transformation.

Digital transformation is a widespread movement that global companies, large and small, are quickly adopting for their business to stay afloat, especially during this ongoing pandemic. Following a survey done by the leading survey company Gartner, 91% of organizations nowadays are engaging in some form of digital initiatives while a survey done before COVID-19 by SAP & Oxford Business implies that leading companies have increased their profits after digital transformation. This movement has inevitably caused an ever-increasing demand for intelligent, reliable and available data to motivate both local and global organizations to implement digital strategies. As a way to satisfy the need for digital transformation strategies, a Malaysian R&D startup, REKA is prioritizing digital enablement as a central focus of their clients’ modernization initiatives. REKA, well-known for the Malaysian talents that created a local autonomous vehicle, is currently exploring the potential engagement in the field of traffic data monitoring with their Japanese counterparts as well as warehouse automation, and the digitalization of the local aftermarket sector.

The COO of REKA, Amri Mohd Din, commented: “We’ve well-equipped our team for the digital transformation movement even before the pandemic which helped our clients to sustain their business by transferring their organization to the digital space. We quickly studied and understood the ever-increasing demand in the current times and started working on digital automation technologies within our services which we used to advance the digitalization process. One of our efforts towards digital transformation was joining the SERV Group to further enhance the digitalization movement beyond the automotive industry”.

Digital transformation has not only transcended the operations and services of businesses worldwide but it has also changed the everyday lives of the people. This global pandemic demonstrated how people in 2020 heavily rely on digital technologies which calls for modern organizations to equip digital transformation strategies to remain relevant in the post-pandemic era. Digital transformation is not just a passing event, it is a long-term movement that has been our commitment since REKA began its journey to build better technology for the people.

Goodbye 2020, holla new REKA!

As we bid adieu to 2020, let’s take a look at what this rollercoaster of a year has brought us and see what’s in store for us next year! This year became the year where we ascended to a new phase at REKA. We remodeled our entire look and feel to represent a brand new identity. This new face of REKA reflects our future alongside the fun and beautiful side of the realm of technology. We took the original REKA logo & branding and made a few tweaks to the design to showcase the endless fun side with different kinds of inputs in technology. Let’s take a look at other achievements we made last year.

by Irma

Last year we took a leap of faith and joined forces with SERV to advance mobility technology in Malaysia which is aligned with our aim to expand the implementation of our AI and autonomous technology. By adding REKA’s capabilities into SERV’s ambition, the group has now provided a simpler approach to promote the R&D of autonomous mobility technology across the automotive networks in the region. This collaboration allows REKA to design and move forward with various types of multi-dimensional tech solutions that will be needed to address the complex problems in the whole automotive industry.

The partnership with our Japanese counterpart began with the deployment of this traffic sensor that was installed at one of the main entry points to Cyberjaya as a test run in 2019. Apart from the technical support from our team, we’re also active in advocating for our local engineers by joining a talk with YME: Young Malaysian Engineers and covered a few subtopics under data analytics such as Economy, Social, Agriculture, Mobility, and Careers/Fresh Grads.

During the peak of the pandemic, we were hard at work to devise a way for us to give back to our dedicated front liners by partnering with MERCY Malaysia to deliver intubation boxes to hospitals around Malaysia! This may not have been a revolutionary way to help them but it was our small contribution to flatten the curve last year.

As it was a stressful time for many, our team was forced to adapt to the ‘new norm’ amidst the ongoing pandemic crisis. Our remote working started just a few weeks before the MCO in Malaysia commenced which was definitely a different experience for many peREKAs who were fortunately coping well whilst juggling between work and personal life with the help of modern technology. We ensured that our team followed all the SOPs seriously by encouraging everyone to mainly work from home & only make essential trips within their vicinity. We believe that our small steps play a huge role in helping to curb the COVID-19 spread by abiding by the SOPs & staying safe through these trying times.

At REKA, we believe in trying to out-do ourselves and achieving greater heights each year. With our friends over at SERV – who believe that great is never good enough – we’ll definitely be working harder towards achieving our shared goal towards serving the people and our nation with innovation in the field of technology. If you’re interested in our future developments, we advise you to expect the unexpected when it comes to our talents and the future we’re building.

A pop of color and more: fresh look at REKA’s new logo

The integration of the colour blue and orange reflects the recent news of REKA merging to become part of SERV Group.

by Irma

Over the past 3 years, REKA has evolved and undergone many changes since the days of the autonomous vehicle project. This expansion has led to the evolution of our new look and feel, which is now expanding to multiple disciplines under Artificial Intelligence, big data analytics and autonomous machinery.

Today, REKA is introducing a new logo and identity family. We decided; what better way to present our internal change than to display it externally. This new face of REKA reflects our future alongside the fun and beautiful side to the realm of technology. We’ve taken the original REKA logo and branding which were originally built to show the systematic and disruption in tech development and made a few tweaks to the design to showcase the endless fun side with different kinds of inputs in technology.

Regarding the design of the logo, it draws inspiration from the fun in the world of technology. The integration of the colour blue and orange reflects the recent news of REKA merging to become part of SERV Group. Every symbol of our new branding symbolizes the fun and curiosity within the heart of each peREKA.

The CEO of REKA, Haziq Faris, expressed his thoughts on the matter. “We have grown our nature of research significantly over the last several years and the newly launched branding is truly showcasing the natural evolution of that transformation. While our name remains the same, our logo has changed significantly to better represent who we are and the uniqueness in each of our talents at REKA”.

Designed to work effortlessly across digital and physical channels, the new logo evokes a feeling of inspiration and the upward-pointing lines signify movement, positivity, speed—and velocity. In addition to this, the new branding also exemplifies how REKA helps companies break through barriers to global business.

Donated intubation boxes to give local healthcare heroes an extra layer of protection

For REKA, this is only the beginning for the team to consistently create solutions for our local health care providers to curb the widespread lack of adequate protective equipment during the ongoing pandemic.

by Irma

While the MCO lockdown was at its tightest phase and Malaysians were forced to work from home, REKA began to develop an extra line of defense for our frontline healthcare professionals to combat COVID-19 by partnering with MERCY Malaysia and providing several local hospitals with intubation boxes. The main objective of this collaboration is to decrease the risk of infection towards healthcare workers during the peak of this pandemic.

Inspired by an open-source design by Taiwan-based Dr. Hsien Yung Lai, these boxes were adapted for local hospitals who required the intubation boxes to shield them from viral droplets generated during the process. Most of the units made are currently being used during the MCO and the team is planning to manufacture more intubation boxes to donate to hospitals that are in need of the equipment.

“We received positive feedback for improvements that will be implemented in future developments. The pandemic urges us to come up with an immediate solution to play our role in helping Malaysian frontliners. Our collaboration with MERCY eases the process to deliver the intubation boxes to the hospitals that are in need. It is heartwarming to experience this rapid and outstanding collaboration during such challenging times” commented the CEO of REKA Inisiatif, Haziq Faris. He noted that the team will always be ready to lend their talents and ideas to assist healthcare workers in fighting against the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia.

For REKA, this is only the beginning for the team to consistently create solutions for our local health care providers to curb the widespread lack of adequate protective equipment during the ongoing pandemic. One of REKA’s current missions is to research and develop other technologies that could potentially contribute to the nation and eventually the community.
